Two things in common with Manuela, Dianne, AND Lisa
– All had severe mental distress in their time in the band. Lisa spoke of stress puking constantly and not being able to hold down food + drank heavily. Manu almost lost her love for music entirely. Dianne had to go see a d o c t o r!
– All three insisted “oh, the guys aren’t bad guys” while their accounts clearly show emotional abuse (intentional or not is irrelevant)
Women should not be treated like machines!
Women should not have to bend over backwards to avoid hurting male feelings!!! their pain should not be trivialized so much that they can call this behavior acceptable in any way!!!!!
“So I did. And I left the band. With a sad eye, but also with a feeling of relief. Free again. Freedom to be me again.”
IS NOT SOMETHING YOU SHOULD SAY WHEN LEAVING A BAND THIS IS NOT NORMAL OKAY
Agree! That quote really hits hard… 🙁
The emotional abuse of women in metal is NOT OKAY!
I love metal as a music genre. But there needs to be more respect for women as musicians, as artists, as creative minds, as PEOPLE. And, in order for that to happen, guys need to stop treating us as the infiltrators of their Boys Club.
We’re so much stronger than we look… but we can still only take just so much. And it’s not because we’re lesser, it’s because we’re expected to be more than human. To be a machine without real feelings, to smile and look pretty.
And that’s why so many women get into metal in the first place. Because underneath the dresses and makeup, there’s a part of us that’s ANGRY.
(Also, periods are metal as fuck. To be in bloody agony for three days and not die, and have it happen over and over again like clockwork? That takes real strength to deal with.)
