How did I miss this one? (Oh wait, it was my depression. Sorry!)
Aether, also called quintessence, is an element in ancient and medieval science. It was said to fill the universe above the earth, and was those earlier societies’ attempts to explain why light, gravity and whatnot exist. Think of aether as a black viscous fluid the stars are swimming in and shining through, and you’ll understand how people saw the universe at that time.
I gotta say, I love the space/mystical connotations of the name. 🙂
