The brain is an organ. Mental illnesses are illnesses of that organ. Brain scans show that there is a physical difference between a healthy brain and a sick brain. Telling someone “You’re not really sick. It’s all in your head.” is like telling someone with asthma “It’s not real, it’s all in your lungs.” The brain is an organ that can malfunction as much as any other organ.

It is in your head, because that’s where your thought processes are located.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not real. Hearing voices? Not having the emotional strength to get out of bed? That’s because something in your brain – the actual squishy, physical organ that exists in your skull – is malfunctioning.

The malfunction can be corrected somewhat with medication, therapy and a good social support system. But it can’t be wished away. Because it’s real. And it’s not about you being a bad person or not wanting happiness hard enough for it to materialise… It’s just about biology. Not-so-simple biology that gets extra-fucky sometimes.

So, the next time someone says, “It’s all in your head”? Tell them, “Of course it is. Where else would it be? My foot?”

Also, remember you’re strong as hell. You’re waking up every day and trying to get shit done even though your brain is acting like it hates you. That’s metal as fuck. You are a secret badass, and don’t let anyone tell you differently.

Mostly, I write stuff. And, like the Egyptians and the Internet, I put cat pictures on my walls. Also, I can read your Tarot.
